PDKV Akola Releases Emergency Agronomic Advisory for Sucking Pest Surges in Drought-Stressed Cotton

Prolonged dry spells and high temperatures trigger thrips and whitefly surges; PDKV entomologists caution against unauthorized pesticide cocktails.
Scientists at Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV, Akola) have issued an urgent plant protection advisory for cotton growers across Yavatmal, Wardha, and Akola following spikes in sap-sucking insects (thrips, aphids, and whiteflies).
Recommended IPM Interventions 1. Economic Threshold Level (ETL): Initiate chemical spraying only when thrips or jassids exceed 10 per leaf or whiteflies exceed 8 adults per leaf across 20 sample plants. 2. Targeted Formulation: - For Thrips & Jassids: Spray Flonicamid 50% WG @ 4 grams in 15 liters of water, OR Thiamethoxam 25% WG @ 4 grams in 15 liters of water. - For Whiteflies: Spray Diafenthiuron 50% WP @ 20 grams in 15 liters of water. 3. Avoid Cocktail Mixtures: Farmers are strictly warned against mixing organophosphates with synthetic pyrethroids, which destroys predatory beneficial ladybird beetles and triggers pest resurgence.
