NCERT Class 8 Textbook Updates: Historical Context of Women's Status Explained

Published: 2026-07-03 Policy changes

The NCERT has introduced new Class 8 Social Science textbooks that reference historical texts to trace the evolution and decline of women's rights in ancient India.

Recent updates to the NCERT Class 8 Social Science textbooks have introduced nuanced discussions regarding the historical position of women in ancient India. The new curriculum incorporates references to the Manusmriti to provide historical context on changing social dynamics. Rather than endorsing the ancient text, the educational body uses it as historical evidence to illustrate the gradual decline of women's rights and autonomy over subsequent centuries.

The Shift from the Early Vedic Period The textbook heavily contrasts later societal norms with the Early Vedic Period (c. 1500-1000 BCE). During this early era, women held respected positions in society, enjoyed equal access to education (including studying the Vedas), and actively participated in religious rituals and assemblies. Women possessed significant autonomy, including freedom in choosing spouses and holding property rights. Notable female scholars and philosophers, known as Brahmavadinis, actively shaped the intellectual discourse of the time.

Analyzing the Manusmriti's Impact Composed between 200 BCE and 300 CE, the Manusmriti (Laws of Manu) is presented in the textbook as a reflection of shifting social and legal norms. The curriculum highlights the text's mixed perspectives. While some verses advocate for the respect and dignity of women—emphasizing their foundational role in family prosperity and motherhood—other provisions heavily restricted their independence.

According to the textbook, the text mandated lifelong male guardianship for women (father in childhood, husband in marriage, son in old age), assigned rigid gender roles centered exclusively on household duties, and significantly limited inheritance rights and access to formal education.

Factors Behind the Social Decline The NCERT material explains that this decline was not caused by a single text but was a gradual process influenced by multiple factors. The rise of patriarchal structures, the codification of rigid social hierarchies (like the caste system), economic transformations toward agrarian societies, and periods of political instability all contributed to restricting women's participation in public and intellectual life.

This textbook revision aligns with NCERT's ongoing mandate under the Ministry of Education to provide comprehensive, evidence-based historical education that encourages critical thinking among students.
