Maharashtra Relief & Rehabilitation Dept Launches Remote Sensing Drought Monitoring Dashboard (Maha-Drought)

New satellite dashboard uses Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Soil Moisture Index (SMI) for automated drought assessment.
The Department of Relief and Rehabilitation, in collaboration with the Maharashtra Remote Sensing Applications Centre (MRSAC), Nagpur, has officially operationalized the Maha-Drought Real-Time Monitoring Portal.
Operational Mechanism of the Portal - Objective Evaluation: The dashboard integrates satellite data from ISRO's Resourcesat and European Sentinel satellites, measuring weekly vegetation health (NDVI), soil moisture deficit, and rainfall anomalies at the revenue circle level. - Elimination of Delays: Automated algorithmic flagging triggers ground truthing surveys, eliminating bureaucratic delays in issuing drought assistance to smallholder farmers. - Public Transparency: Citizens and farmers can access the portal to view hydrological indices and rainfall status for their specific village.
