IMD Agromet Advisory: Dry Spell Mitigation for Standing Soybean and Cotton in Vidarbha

IMD Pune and Dr. PDKV Akola advise farmers on in-situ moisture conservation and potassium nitrate foliar sprays to counter erratic dry spells.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Agromet Advisory Service, in collaboration with Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV, Akola), has issued a seasonal agronomic bulletin for rainfed cotton and soybean belts experiencing moisture deficit during pod and boll development.
Scientific Agronomic Recommendations 1. Foliar Spray for Stress Relief: Spray 2% Potassium Nitrate (13:0:45) @ 200 grams in 10 liters of water on standing cotton and soybean crops. This maintains leaf turgor pressure and minimizes boll/pod dropping under dry heat. 2. Dust Mulching & Interculture: Operate a light hoe or tynes (दवंडी) between crop rows to create a soil dust mulch. This breaks capillary soil pores and arrests deep soil moisture evaporation. 3. Protective Irrigation from Farm Ponds: Wherever farm ponds (शेततळे) have stored water, provide one protective irrigation through micro-sprinklers or drip lines during the evening hours.
