ICAR-IISR Indore Issues Advisory on Avoiding Storage Pest Infestation in Farm-Saved Soybean Seeds

Soybean research scientists outline triple-layer hermetic bag storage and safe neem-based protection to maintain 70%+ germination for Kharif 2027.
The ICAR-Indian Institute of Soybean Research (IISR), Indore, has published a specialized preservation advisory for farmers storing home-grown soybean for next season's seed stock.
Critical Seed Storage Guidelines 1. Moisture Threshold: Cleaned seed must be dried under gentle sunlight until moisture drops to 9% to 10%. Storing seed above 12% moisture leads to seed coat decay and germination loss below 70%. 2. Hermetic Storage Bags: Use triple-layer Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) hermetic bags. Oxygen depletion inside sealed hermetic bags naturally suffocates pulse beetles (bruchids) without toxic chemical fumes. 3. Storage Stacking: Store bags on raised wooden pallets at least 1 foot away from concrete walls in cool, ventilated rooms. Never store seed bags in direct contact with damp cement flooring.
