CICR Nagpur promotes 90 x 10 cm compact planting to harvest 15 quintals/hectare in 130 days, successfully escaping late-season drought and pink bollworm.
Scientists at the ICAR-Central Institute for Cotton Research (CICR), Nagpur, have demonstrated the field success of the High-Density Planting System (HDPS / सघन कापूस लागवड) across 500 demonstration plots in Vidarbha.
The HDPS Agronomic Model - Plant Spacing: 90 cm between rows and 10 cm between plants, accommodating approximately 1,11,000 plants per hectare (compared to 18,000 in conventional spacing). - Escape from Drought: Semi-compact varieties mature uniformly within 130 to 140 days, allowing farmers to harvest all bolls before post-monsoon soil moisture evaporates in December. - Pink Bollworm Avoidance: Because harvesting concludes early, the crop escapes the destructive 3rd and 4th reproductive generations of pink bollworm.
